Aceh Optimizes International Flight to Boost Tourist Arrivals

Aceh’s Department of Culture and Tourism stated that it will optimize Banda Aceh to Penang and Kuala Lumpur international flights to increase tourist visits to foreign countries from Malaysia.

“One of the efforts to increase visits is to optimize direct flights on the Banda Aceh ‘Penang or Kuala Lumpur route and explore the opening of new routes,” said Head of the Aceh’s Department of Culture and Tourism, Almuniza Kamal in Banda Aceh, Saturday.

The statement was made regarding the high visit of foreign tourists from Malaysia who traveled to the province at the far west of Indonesia.

He explained that currently there are several international flights serving flights from Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport, Blang Bintang Aceh Besar to Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

As for international airlines, namely Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur ten times a week, Fire Fly to Penang four times a week and Super Air Jet to Kuala Lumpur every day or once a day.

“We will optimize existing flights and no less important is to increase Aceh’s tourism promotion to Malaysia and other areas,” he said.

In addition, his party also established business-to-business cooperation between Acehnese tourism business actors and Malaysian travel agents.

“We are optimistic that the various steps that will continue to be taken, including improving service standards through training on tourism human resources, will be able to attract many tourists to visit Aceh,” he said.

The Central Statistics Agency of Aceh Province recorded that the number of foreign tourists visiting Aceh in May 2025 was 4,019 people dominated by travelers from neighboring Malaysia.

“The visit of foreign tourists to Aceh has increased dramatically compared to April, reaching 82 percent,” said Acting Head of BPS Aceh Tasdik Ilhamudin.

He explained that the increase in the number of tourists from the neighboring country in particular could not be separated from the attraction of the tourist spot in the province of about five million people.

He mentioned that of the total foreign tourist visits to Aceh, namely 4,019 people, 3,319 people from Malaysia and the rest from Thailand 52 people, Australia 33 people, Germany 30 people and 29 France.
