The Sabang City Administration is introducing new adrenaline-pumping attractions to elevate its tourism profile, with plans to launch aerotourism, a form of aerial adventure travel offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the region’s natural beauty from above.
Located on Weh Island in Aceh Province, Sabang is Indonesia’s westernmost city, known for its pristine beaches, marine biodiversity, and strategic position as a gateway to the country’s outer islands.
Its geographic and ecological significance make it a key destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Harry Susethia, Head of the Sabang City Tourism Agency, said the development of aerotourism is a strategic move to expand the region’s appeal amid growing competition among national tourism hotspots.
“As a tourist destination, Sabang deserves to offer fresh attractions. We’re exploring new tourism potential, including aerotourism, which allows visitors to enjoy Sabang’s beauty not only from the sea, but also from the sky, via paragliding, paramotoring, or small aircraft,” Harry said on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
To ensure safety and technical compliance, the Tourism Agency will collaborate with Maimun Saleh Air Force Base in planning and implementing the aerotourism program. “This partnership is essential to meet aviation standards and ensure all operational aspects are properly managed,” he added.
Beyond enhancing the city’s tourism offerings, aerotourism is expected to attract special interest travelers, particularly those drawn to extreme sports and nature-based adventures. “We want Sabang to be known not only for its stunning seas, but also as a complete adventure tourism destination. Aerotourism will complement that potential,” Harry explained.
The agency is currently mapping several strategic locations suitable for aerotourism activities. Hilly and coastal areas are being assessed for their potential as launch sites for paragliding and paramotoring, offering panoramic views of Sabang’s land and sea.
Harry noted that the administration is also preparing supporting infrastructure and conducting technical studies in coordination with air sports communities and relevant agencies. These steps are designed to ensure that all safety protocols are in place before the program is officially launched.
The Sabang City Administration remains optimistic that aerotourism will become a new magnet for visitors, reinforcing Sabang’s image as a premier destination on Indonesia’s western frontier.
“We want Sabang to be a place where the beauty of the sea, land, and sky come together in one unforgettable experience,” Harry concluded.
