Keureuto Dam Can Overcome Floods And Support Food Security

Deputy Minister of Public Works (PU) Diana Kusumastuti said the construction of the Keureuto Dam in Paya Bakong District, North Aceh Regency, had been completed.

Diana explained that the Keureuto Dam was one of 65 dams that the Ministry of PUPR had built in the 2015-2024 period and is now ready to be inaugurated.

“The Keureuto Dam is built multifunction for the supply of raw water, irrigate irrigation land, potential electrical energy to flood reduction benefits. Regarding the use of irrigation to support food self-sufficiency, please immediately build irrigation networks in potential areas and cooperate with local governments regarding the authority of the channel,” Diana said in a written statement, Monday, February 10.

Meanwhile, Acting Regent of North Aceh Mahyuzar expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Public Works for the completion of the Keureuto Dam which was useful in reducing floods covering an area of 627 hectares, especially in Matang Kuli, Lhoksukon and Tanah Luas Districts.

“Before there was a dam, every year the local government used a large enough APBD to deal with flood problems in North Aceh. However, in 2024 until this year, flooding has greatly reduced,” he said.

To note, the Keureuto Dam has a capacity of 215 million cubic meters with an inundation area of 896 hectares.

This dam also has a function of providing raw water with a capacity of 650 liters per second for Paya Bakong, Tanah Luas, Pirak Timu, Matang Kuli and Lhoksukon sub-districts in North Aceh Regency.

Then also have the potential for PLTS Apung with a capacity of 179 MW and a hydropower plant of 6.3 MW.

As for the irrigation service function, it covers an area of 9,081 hectares. Meanwhile, the potential area is 2,921 hectares with an planting index (IP) of 200 percent, divided into irrigation areas (DI) Alue Ubay Kanan covering an area of 1,600 hectares and Di Alue Ubay Kiri covering an area of 1,321 hectares.
