The Sabang International Regatta 2011 was launched on Wednesday evening. The regatta is part of an international yacht race from Sept. 13-25, running from Phuket, Thailand to Weh island in Sabang, Aceh, with a stop in Langkawi, Malaysia, in between.
“The aim of the event is to promote Sabang as a marine tourist destination. We want to include the Sabang International Regatta on the international calendar of events,” Sapta Nirwandar, the Culture and Tourism Ministry’s tourism marketing chief said as quoted by Antara on Thursday.
Sapta said Sabang has a natural berth that could accommodate international cruise ships bringing tourists to explore the beautiful marine park around Weh islet.
Event organizers said 26 yacht owners from Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the US had confirmed participation in the race.
