Simeulue Exports Tons of Fresh Fish to Japan

Fishery products from Simeulue Regency in Aceh have entered the Japanese market with a shipment of six metric tons of fresh fish. The export is expected to help increase the market value of local fishermen’s catch.

The Simeulue Marine and Fisheries Agency (DKP) Head Supriman Juliansyah said the shipment consisted of octopus and parrotfish and was facilitated through private partner PT Usaha Mina Meuruke.

“The shipment of fresh fish from Simeulue Island to Japan reached six tons. The products came from a cold storage facility owned by the Simeulue Regency Administration,” Supriman said in a statement in Simeulue on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to Supriman, the exported fish command relatively high prices. Octopus is valued at IDR 124,000 per kilogram (approximately USD 6.93), while parrotfish sells for IDR 30,000 per kilogram.

He said the fish undergo quarantine procedures before export to ensure freshness, hygiene, and freedom from disease.

Supriman noted that fishery products from Simeulue have strong competitiveness and are well received in destination markets, particularly Japan.

“The high quality of fish from Simeulue Island gives these products a competitive edge in international markets. We continue to remind business operators to maintain the quality of fish sold overseas,” he said.

He added that Simeulue has significant marine fishery potential that, if managed optimally, could improve community welfare.

The local administration is also working to improve management of the region’s fisheries sector, so export activities generate broader economic benefits, particularly for fishermen.

Simeulue is the outermost island regency in Aceh Province. Located in the Indian Ocean, the island lies approximately 180 nautical miles off the west coast of Sumatra. Established as a separate regency from West Aceh in 1999, Simeulue consists of 10 subdistricts and 138 villages, with a population of around 96,000. ***
