The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, inaugurated the revitalization of the historic Tamansari Gunongan site in Banda Aceh on Sunday night.
This revitalization focuses on the cage area which is the tomb of the Aceh royal family, an important part of cultural heritage that requires special attention.
In his remarks, Fadli Zon said that Tamansari Gunongan is a site that has great historical value and is important for more in-depth studies.
This revitalization is a continuation of the research previously conducted in 1975-1976, showing continuity in the preservation of Aceh’s cultural heritage.
On this occasion, Fadli Zon visited Gunongan which was built by Sultan Iskandar Muda as an offering for his empress. He also visited the cage area in the complex and made a pilgrimage to the tomb believed to be the resting place for Sultan Iskandar Tsani, Sultan Iskandar Muda’s son-in-law, and two other graves.
He also explained that the latest findings from the study at this site, including artifacts and frames, can be used as a basis for further storage steps. The Tamansari Gunongan site itself has been recorded in the Bustanussalatin manuscript, which is one of the important references in revitalization. In addition, the condition of the site which is still maintained shows that the preservation carried out so far has given positive results.
One of the main concerns in this revitalization is the cage area which previously did not reflect its function as a royal family grave. The old documentation shows that the tombstones in the area were closed on the floor, so visitors unknowingly walked on it.
Through revitalization, the sacred function of this area is restored, and people’s perception of it is changed. Thus, Tamansari Gunongan is now not only a historical site, but also offers a more meaningful dimension of pilgrimage tourism.
Fadli Zon also emphasized the importance of reviving this site with various cultural activities. He emphasized that Tamansari Gunongan should not only be a place of historical storage, but also a center for cultural activities involving various parties, including the government, private sector, and community communities. According to him, this step is important to ensure that this site remains relevant and contributes to local cultural development.
With this revitalization, it is hoped that Tamansari Gunongan will further strengthen his position as one of the invaluable cultural heritages in Aceh, as well as become a tourist attraction that supports the preservation of history and culture.
