Sabang – In a concerted effort to rehabilitate the marine ecosystem, the State-Owned Enterprises Volunteers Program (Bakti BUMN) and the Batee Shok Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) successfully planted 250 coral reefs in the waters of Pria Laot, Sabang City, Aceh Province.

Agus Hermanto, one of the Bakti BUMN volunteers, explained that the coral planting was carried out using the transplantation method, utilizing high-quality seedlings to accelerate growth patterns.

“This method has proven to be more effective in accelerating coral growth compared to other methods,” he said on Friday, February 21, 2025, quoted by rri.co.id.

“We used 10 transplantation tables, each with 25 planting points, totaling 250 coral reefs. The transplantation method is more effective than the attachment method, as corals are less likely to detach when facing strong currents,” Agus elaborated.

Prior to the planting, the volunteers conducted educational sessions for local fishermen and Pokdarwis members on rehabilitation methods and how to care for the coral reefs, enabling the community to actively participate in maintaining the sustainability of the marine ecosystem.

“About 30 fishermen and Pokdarwis members were involved, both in the educational sessions and during the coral transplantation,” he added.

Agus emphasized that the involvement of all parties is crucial, as the majority of Sabang’s population relies on the sea for their livelihoods through both fisheries and tourism.

“Therefore, let’s work together to protect our marine ecosystem. We hope for support from the community, Pokdarwis, and the government to ensure the preservation of the sea for our future generations,” he concluded.
