JICA Greenhouse Aims to Boost Sabang’s Salted Fish Quality

Sabang – The Marine and Fisheries Research Center of Syiah Kuala University (PRKP USK), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has provided a new greenhouse facility to the Sabena fish processing group in Gampong Jaboi, Sabang City, Aceh Province.

The greenhouse was handed over to M. Ahyar, the owner of the Sabena salted fish production business.

The university’s team head, Haikal Azief Haridhi, explained that while the Sabena group has been operating successfully, there is still room for improvement.

“The Sabena group’s processing activities still need improvement in quality and drying methods,” said Haikal on Thursday, February 13, 2025, quoted by rri.co.id.

“Additionally, the geographical location of Jaboi is unique due to its proximity to volcanic areas. During the greenhouse construction, we carefully selected materials to ensure its durability in this specific climate,” Haikal added.

Meanwhile, JICA INTEM Consulting Team Leader Niwa Yukiyasu explained that his party trained Sabena salted fish business owners before establishing a greenhouse.

“In the next one to two years, the JICA team will monitor and evaluate whether this project is successful or not. After getting the results, we can determine what steps can be taken next,” said Niwa.

The Sabena salted fish processing operation is carried out by at least eight to ten residents of Jaboi Village, primarily dominated by women. The task starts from cleaning and ends with drying.

M. Ahyar, who owns the fish drying business, said they have long hoped for facilities of this kind so that the salted fish business in Jaboi can continue to thrive.

Sabena’s salted fish is currently available in Sabang City and has expanded to various regions in Aceh.

“Our products have been sent to Banda Aceh, Sabang, and Sigli; sometimes, we deliver them to Takengon. With the greenhouse, the fish drying procedure is more regulated, not reliant on the weather, and the result is better,” he said, as quoted by rri.co.id.

The quantity of salted fish dispatched in a month varies. Nonetheless, his business results have reached up to 1.5 tons, depending on demand and the availability of supplies. ***
